Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract (optional)
  • Food coloring (optional for decoration)
  • Royal icing or sprinkles for decorating

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract, mixing until combined.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients into the wet mixture, mixing until the dough forms.
  5. Divide the dough in half, wrap in plastic wrap, and chill for 1 hour.
  6. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  7. Roll out the dough to about ¼ inch thick on a lightly floured surface.
  8. Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out cookies and transfer them to the prepared baking sheets.
  9. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until edges are lightly golden. Cool completely before decorating.
  10. Decorate with royal icing, sprinkles, or your choice of decorations.

Notes

  • Chill the dough to prevent cookies from spreading while baking.
  • For softer cookies, bake on the lower end of the time range.
  • Customize colors and decorations to match any theme or occasion.
